IPCC: 13 police officers investigated as part of Hillsborough 'cover-up'

The IPCC announce that 12 retired police officers and one serving are under investigation regarding an alleged cover-up of the 1989 Hillsborough disaster.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has revealed that 13 police officers - 12 retired and one serving - are under investigation over the alleged cover-up of the Hillsborough disaster.

Fresh inquests into the deaths of 96 Liverpool fans will begin on Monday, March 31 after the original 'accidental' verdict was quashed following revelations regarding police conduct.

An independent panel discovered that more than 100 police statements were altered after Liverpool fans were crushed during an FA Cup semi-final at the Hillsborough stadium against Nottingham Forest back in 1989.

Following Thursday's pre-inquest hearing, the IPCC have announced via their Twitter account that 13 officers are suspects in their investigation under offences that include perverting the course of justice, misconduct in a public office and manslaughter.

It has been claimed that the BBC have handed over an hour of unseen footage from the Hillsborough ground ahead of the inquests, which will be carried out in Warrington.
