Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard has helped in the Hurricane Sandy relief effort by donating a hoard of signed Toffees shirts.

The 33-year-old, who was born in New Jersey, has joined up with Merseyside underwear company Urban Active, who are donating clothes to students from a school in New York.

"Hurricane Sandy affected many people and many areas that I know well," Howard told the Liverpool Echo.

"There are a lot of similarities between Liverpool and New York and the spirit and generosity of the people are just two of them. It's great that the people of Liverpool are helping out but it's no surprise. I am delighted to help out in any way I can."

The shirts will be part of a raffle in the US and all proceeds will go the victims of the storm.
