The CEO of Formula 1's parent company, Liberty Media, has revealed that Lewis Hamilton is showing interest in buying a MotoGP team.
A few months ago, when news broke that Liberty Media was acquiring MotoGP, speculation began that Hamilton had set his sights on the Ducati-affiliated Gresini MotoGP team.
The seven-time world champion remained cautious when asked about the rumours during the British Grand Prix.
"I've always loved MotoGP," he said at the time.
"I'm interested in the potential growth of the sport, but I haven't looked that far into it just yet. But anything's possible."
Now, Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei has confirmed Hamilton's genuine interest in purchasing a MotoGP team.
"When we confirmed that we were taking over MotoGP, we immediately received calls from people saying 'I want to buy a team'," Maffei shared at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia and Technology conference.
"People like Lewis Hamilton."
When asked why Hamilton, along with others, is interested in investing in MotoGP, Maffei explained, "Because they saw what we have done with Formula 1 and they want to jump on the bandwagon."
"We would like to continue such discussions," Maffei added, as quoted by Speed Week, "but now we have to wait for the EU's approval."
Once that approval is granted, Maffei already has plans in place to introduce another MotoGP race to the calendar.
"In the USA, we currently have Formula 1 races in Miami, Austin, and Las Vegas," he said, "so we definitely see room for a second MotoGP race in America."
"We sense the opportunity to do for MotoGP what we have already done for Formula 1."
