Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan threatens to quit if he is charged by the FA

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan says that he will quit the club if he is charged by the FA for 'racist' comments made about Jewish and Chinese people.

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has said that he will quit his role if he is punished by the FA for 'racist' comments.

The 77-year-old has been asked to give his story of events about comments he made regarding Jewish and Chinese people, which left Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan furious.

Whelan responded by telling ITV News: "If the FA looks at my affairs- and they were to find me guilty, which I hope they don't and I don't see anything like that happening because I'm absolutely anti-racist, always have been, always will be- however, if they have any questions I'm willing to answer it and, should they even suggest I'm guilty I would immediately resign from my position as chairman of Wigan Athletic."

Whelan has just hired former Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay, who is also under investigation by the FA for allegedly sending racist, sexist and homophobic text messages during his time in charge in Wales, as his new manager at the DW Stadium.

The FA has made the Whelan investigation a priority and could deliver their verdict next week.
