Mauricio Pochettino expects Harry Kane "to learn" from the public backlash faced after claiming Tottenham Hotspur's second goal at Stoke City last weekend.

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has said that he expects Harry Kane "to learn a lot" from the controversy over last week's second goal at Stoke City.

The England international was rewarded the goal - initially given to teammate Christian Eriksen - following strong protests after the match.

Kane, who is now within four goals of Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah in the scoring charts, was ridiculed by some on social media for his determination to take the goal away from Eriksen.

Pochettino has already stressed that the incident "is not a big deal" for Spurs, but he admits that the strength of the public response did catch Kane by surprise.

"Of course, he never thought that this situation would escalate, when he was so certain that he touched the ball," he told reporters.

"It's normal that he was a little bit disappointed [by the response] because Harry and all our players have Twitter, Instagram and all those things and while Tottenham fans will have supported him, fans of other clubs will have killed him.

"People have opinions, but that is normal. He was disappointed because he never wanted to create this. Sometimes it can seem a simple thing, and then it becomes big and you can't stop it. That is what happened here. I think he is going to learn a lot from this you know."

Kane's 25-goal haul in the Premier League this season includes six braces and two hat-tricks.
