The Football Association have charged Newcastle United and Sunderland with failing to control their players during the Tyne-Wear derby on Sunday.

The explosive encounter finished 1-1, with Sunderland leaving the pitch with nine men after Stephane Sessegnon and Lee Cattermole were dismissed from play.

The FA statement read: "The charge is that the clubs failed to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative behaviour in relation to an incident which occured in the 19th minute following a challenge by Sunderland's James McClean on Newcastle's Danny Simpson."

Both sides have until 4pm on March 12 to respond.
