Two goals from substitute Giovani dos Santos give Mexico maximum points from their encounter with Gabon.

Giovani dos Santos came off the bench to score two goals as Mexico claimed maximum points from their encounter with Gabon at the Coventry City's Ricoh Arena this afternoon.

Goalscoring chances were few and far between during the opening 45 minutes. Mexico looked the more likely team to score, but neither Marco Fabian nor Miguel Ponce were able to break the deadlock.

The half-time introduction of Tottenham Hotspur's Dos Santos proved to be a match winning one for the Mexicans. With 63 minutes on the clock Oribe Peralta played in Dos Santos, who slotted the ball into the net from the edge of the area.

He had another chance to extend his side's lead moments later from a similar position, but on this occasion he shot over.

However, in stoppage time the 23-year-old made sure of the points. Gabon's Henri Ngong fouled Peralta inside the area and was sent off as a result. Dos Santos stepped up the convert the penalty and in doing so all but eliminated Gabon from the competition.
