Roy Makaay: Robin van Persie "still has something to offer" Manchester United

Robin van Persie is still capable of producing the goods for Manchester United, his fellow Dutchman Roy Makaay tells Sports Mole.

Roy Makaay has told Sports Mole that Robin van Persie "still has something to offer" Manchester United.

Van Persie joined United from Arsenal in 2012 and he was an instant hit at Old Trafford thanks to the 30 goals that he scored in all competitions during his debut season to help the Red Devils win a 20th English league title.

However, in the two campaigns that have followed, the Dutchman has struggled for form and fitness, which has culminated in him finding the net on 28 occasions during that time.

With just 12 months left to run on his contract, there have been suggestions that the 31-year-old could be sold this summer, with the likes of Italian champions Juventus reportedly harbouring an interest.

Yet, former Bayern Munich and Netherlands international Makaay has insisted that his compatriot is still capable of producing the goods in a United shirt, providing that he regain full fitness.

"He still has something to offer. He didn't have a good year because he came back from the World Cup struggling for fitness. He had some nice matches as well. I saw him play Southampton away, he scored two goals and was fantastic. He still has those skills, but he's not the youngest any more," said the 40-year-old.

"You see what happens at big clubs, if they can sign a young new player they will. But, he still has the quality and the holidays will have been very good for him.

"He will have rested up so he can start fit for the new season because for the national team he has only been able to last just over an hour when we are used to Van Persie as our leading attacker. He's still an amazing player."

In total, Van Persie has scored 58 goals in 105 United outings.
