Arsenal confirm Danny Welbeck capture

Arsenal announce that they have signed Danny Welbeck from Manchester United on a long-term deal.

Arsenal have completed the deadline-day signing of Manchester United striker Danny Welbeck after being granted an extension to complete the deal.

The Gunners failed to wrap up the move within the 11pm deadline and were subsequently handed an additional two-hour period in which to finalise the switch.

Now, Arsenal have signed the 23-year-old on a five-year deal that is reported to have cost the London club somewhere in the region of £16m.

Tottenham Hotspur had looked favourites to land the United starlet after being heavily linked with him throughout the afternoon.

However, Welbeck, who was already at the Gunners' training ground on England duty, is reported to have favoured a move to Arsenal due to their participation in the Champions League.

He represents Arsene Wenger's fifth and final signing of the transfer window, following Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy, Calum Chambers and David Ospina to the Emirates Stadium.

The England forward struck 29 times for United since breaking into their first team in 2011.

The Red Devils are expected to announce the signing of striker Radamel Falcao to replace Welbeck at Old Trafford.
