Marco Rose is a surprise inclusion on the shortlist of names to succeed Jose Mourinho as Manchester United's next permanent manager, according to a report.

Red Bull Salzburg boss Marco Rose is under consideration to become Manchester United's next permanent manager, according to a report.

The Red Devils have placed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in caretaker charge until the end of the season following the sacking of Jose Mourinho last month.

Solskjaer has made a perfect start to life in the Old Trafford dugout by winning three games from three, lifting United back into top-four contention in the Premier League.

A new manager is expected to be appointed in time for next season, however, and The Sun claims that a shortlist of names has already been drawn up, with Rose a surprise inclusion.

Rose is said to have caught the attention of United bigwigs thanks to his impressive work with Salzburg over the past 18 months, guiding the club to the Austrian title in his first full season and remaining unbeaten in his second, while also putting together a good run in the Europa League last term.

Zinedine Zidane, Laurent Blanc and interim coach Solskjaer are also being mentioned as contenders for the job, but Mauricio Pochettino is still reportedly the preferred choice, despite Tottenham Hotspur's reluctance to conduct business with their Prem rivals.
