Manchester United 'did not try to poach Pep Guardiola from Manchester City'

Manchester United reportedly did not try to tempt Pep Guardiola to Old Trafford and accepted months ago that the Spaniard would join Manchester City.

Manchester United reportedly did not try to scupper Manchester City's move for Pep Guardiola.

The two-time Premier League champions announced on Monday that Guardiola will succeed outgoing manager Manuel Pellegrini in the summer.

Guardiola revealed a few months ago that he will leave his current post at Bayern Munich when the season comes to a close, citing his desire to coach in the Premier League as a reason for the departure.

City became the overwhelming frontrunners to land the Spaniard's signature, but there were rumours that the 45-year-old could set up shop at United due to the uncertainty over current boss Louis van Gaal.

According to Sky Sports News, though, United were not in the running to appoint Guardiola as they had already accepted months ago that he would join their local rivals.

Van Gaal has one year remaining on his contract at Old Trafford.
