Cristiano Ronaldo's record vs. Arsenal

Sports Mole looks at Cristiano Ronaldo's record against Arsenal ahead of Thursday's Premier League clash.

Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to be back in the Manchester United starting XI when the Red Devils welcome Arsenal to Old Trafford in the Premier League on Thursday.

The 36-year-old has been in excellent scoring form for the English giants since returning over the summer, finding the back of the net on 10 occasions in 15 appearances.

However, he was named on the bench against Chelsea in the league on Sunday, with Michael Carrick selecting Bruno Fernandes in a forward area alongside Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho.

The Portugal international will be looking for his fifth Premier League goal of the season against Mikel Arteta's side, who have not lost at Old Trafford since April 2018.

Here, Sports Mole looks at how the former Sporting Lisbon youngster has performed against the Gunners in the past.

Ronaldo has faced Arsenal on 15 occasions during his professional career, boasting a record of seven wins, four draws and four defeats against them, while he has scored six times and provided two assists.

The attacker has won four, drawn four and lost three of his 11 Premier League meetings against the Gunners, scoring four times and providing one assist; he netted a brace against the North London club at Highbury during the 2004-05 campaign before scoring home and away in the 2007-08 season.

Ronaldo has actually only won one of his last six Premier League matches against Arsenal, though, and his last league clash with the capital side ended in a goalless draw at Old Trafford in May 2009.

The Portuguese has also tackled Arsenal on two occasions in the FA Cup, helping Man United record a 1-0 victory in the semi-finals of the 2003-04 competition, but he could not prevent the 20-time English champions from losing 5-4 on penalties to the Gunners in the 2005 final.

Ronaldo also famously helped Man United overcome Arsenal in the semi-finals of the 2008-09 Champions League, starring in the second leg against them in North London.

The forward played the full 90 minutes of the 1-0 victory at Old Trafford before scoring twice and providing one assist in the 3-1 success at the Emirates Stadium in the second leg.

Interestingly, five of Ronaldo's six goals against Arsenal in all competitions have come away from home, with the Portuguese's only Old Trafford goal against the London club coming in a 2-1 success in April 2008.

The former Sporting Lisbon youngster did not tackle the Gunners during his time at either Real Madrid or Juventus, so Thursday's match will be his first appearance against the English giants since a goalless draw at Old Trafford on the penultimate weekend of the 2008-09 campaign.
