Bayern Munich chief Lothar Matthaus confirms that the club are interested in bringing back former boss Pep Guardiola as a permanent replacement for Niko Kovac.

Bayern Munich chief Lothar Matthaus has confirmed reports that the club are interested in bringing back former boss Pep Guardiola.

The German champions, currently third in the Bundesliga, are without a permanent manager following the sacking of Niko Kovac earlier this month.

Matthaus told Bild: "If Bayern want to play possession football, there is no better solution than Guardiola.

"It would be a win for Bayern Munich and for the Bundesliga."

Guardiola joined Bayern in 2013 and led them to three league titles in three seasons before joining Manchester City in 2016.

Bayern's interim manager Hansi Flick has won both of his games following a 5-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt which brought to an end Kovac's 16-month reign at the Allianz Arena.

Thomas Tuchel, Jose Mourinho, Erik ten Hag and Ralf Rangnick have all also been mentioned as potential candidates to replace Kovac as permanent manager.
