Liverpool announce that 20-year-old midfielder Tyler Morton, who is currently on loan at Blackburn Rovers, has signed a new long-term contract.

Liverpool have announced that 20-year-old midfielder Tyler Morton has signed a new long-term contract at Anfield.

The England youth international has spent the 2022-23 season on loan at Championship side Blackburn Rovers, where he has amassed two assists from 28 games in all competitions.

Morton has started 20 Championship games for Blackburn in the current campaign, and he was a part of Liverpool's FA Cup and EFL Cup-winning teams in the 2021-22 season.

Speaking to liverpoolfc.com after putting pen to paper on his new deal, Morton said: "I'm absolutely buzzing. The little dream is coming true, so I couldn't be happier.

"I've known for a little while and it's been ongoing, and I couldn't wait to get it over the line because this is the place I want to be and this is the club I want to be at. I'm absolutely buzzing and I can't wait for the future."

Morton quickly rose through the academy ranks at Anfield, and he has struck an impressive six goals and eight assists in 36 games for the club's Under-21s.

The 20-year-old's progress quickly won over Jurgen Klopp, and he made his first-team debut for Liverpool in an EFL Cup third-round tie against Norwich City in September 2021.

Morton has made nine appearances for the senior Reds team in total, including one start in the Premier League in a 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in December 2021.

In the Champions League, meanwhile, Morton played the full 90 minutes in group-stage wins over Porto and AC Milan - the latter of which came at San Siro - last season.

Having cemented his place in the Blackburn team as they push for promotion to the Premier League, Morton added: "I've been extremely proud of myself for how I've handled the loan so far. Hopefully I carry that on and take it into the next half of the season.

"I feel like I'm progressing every day and learning new things on and off the pitch. It's a lovely environment to learn and turn myself into a professional – and I think I'm doing that quite well. Hopefully it sets me up for what's to come in the future."

On his relationship with Klopp, who described Morton as a "big pleasure" to watch following their win over AC Milan in the Champions League, the midfielder said: "He was very good with me.

"Before I went [to Blackburn], him, Pep [Lijnders] and Vitor [Matos] all spoke to me quite a lot. Obviously I had options where to go and they were just giving me advice and helping me throughout.

"I think they handled the situation very well and I also handled the situation very well. They just allow me to go out there and enjoy my footy and just play as many games as I can."

Morton's extension sees him follow the likes of Mohamed Salah, James Milner, Joe Gomez, Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott, who have all penned new deals at Anfield in the last 12 months.
