Roy Hodgson to consult Brendan Rodgers over Daniel Sturridge

Roy Hodgson insists that he will consult with Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers before deciding on whether to name Daniel Sturridge in this week's England squad.

Roy Hodgson has confirmed that he will liaise with Brendan Rodgers before deciding on whether to include Daniel Sturridge in his England squad on Friday.

The striker has not featured for Liverpool since sustaining a calf injury on international duty, and then a thigh strain in Reds training as he neared a comeback.

He travelled with his Merseyside club to Spain for their Champions League defeat to Real Madrid on Tuesday, leading to speculation that he could play in England's Euro 2016 qualifier against Slovenia, or the friendly with Scotland next week.

Rodgers was frustrated with how Sturridge's fitness was managed when he was last with the Three Lions, and Hodgson has insisted that he will soon consult with the Liverpool manager for advice on the 24-year-old's condition, having yet to do so.

"No. Not at the moment but I have it in mind to do so of course. I was actually rather waiting to see what the situation would be with him," he told reporters.

"It's very good news he has travelled, but of course before I was to select him again I would check both with the player and with the club to make certain we were doing the right thing."

Hodgson was also playing his cards close to his chest with regards to other possible inclusions, with fit-again Arsenal winger Theo Walcott and in-form West Bromwich Albion forward Saido Berahino in contention.

He added: "If there are going to be surprises, we'll have to wait and see. I couldn't possibly give away any information now."

England go into their November 15 fixture with Slovenia at Wembley with maximum points in Group E.
