Leeds United cut short Charlie Horton contract

Leeds United goalkeeper Charlie Horton brings an end to his short spell at Elland Road due to family reasons.

Charlie Horton has had his Leeds United contract cut short to return home to America due to a "private family matter".

The summer signing from Cardiff City was an unused sub in each of the Whites' last seven Championship matches, but did not make a senior appearance for the club.

A statement on United's official website confirmed that the USA Under-23s international has now headed back to the United States - a decision that the Yorkshire outfit fully supports.

"[Horton] has the full backing of the club in his decision and leaves with the best wishes of everybody connected to Leeds United," it read. "The club is disappointed to lose such a promising young goalkeeper, but both owner Massimo Cellino and head coach Steve Evans were ultimately understanding and supportive of Charlie's decision considering the circumstances."

Horton, who featured twice for Leeds' Under-21s side during his short spell at Elland Road, added: "I've had to leave because of a private family matter back home. For me there is only one thing which comes before this football club – my family. That is the sole reason I'm going home.

"I ask people to respect my privacy while I handle it, as it is not a short-term matter. I'm extremely grateful for the compassion and understanding I have received from Massimo Cellino and Steve Evans. They have been absolutely top drawer about it. I'm very grateful that they understood and I wish them nothing but the very best going forward.

"I would like to thank all the fans for the amazing support and welcome they have shown me here. I'm disappointed that it's over so soon, but Leeds will always hold a special place in my heart. I'll always follow each game from across the pond. I wish them all the best."

Horton joined Cardiff in 2014 as a free agent, before moving on to Championship rivals Leeds in the summer.
