Shaun Maloney: 'David Marshall deserves Premier League return'

Scotland winger Shaun Maloney believes that international teammate David Marshall deserves to play in the Premier League.

Shaun Maloney has said that David Marshall deserves to play for a Premier League side amid reports that Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are interested in the Cardiff City goalkeeper.

Arsenal have been linked to a £15m bid for the Scotland international, while their North London rivals are also said to be interested.

Marshall's international teammate told Wales Online: "The value is just a reflection of the way the game is in the Premiership. You see players going between English clubs for big sums so it wouldn't be a surprise.

"David was touted for the Premiership team of the season so it's been an excellent campaign for him. If he gets a move back to the Premiership he'll have fully deserved it.

"In fact, Cardiff might want to keep him because of the lure of the finances if they get back into the Premiership. That might dictate they want to hold on to him. But certainly in terms of the teams being linked with him, I don't think there's a great gulf between David and the keepers they already have."

James McCarthy's £14m move to Everton last summer set a new record for the highest transfer fee paid for a Scottish player.
