Yorkshire to host start of 2014 Tour de France

Yorkshire will host the start of the 2014 Tour de France after beating out bids from Florence and Edinburgh.

Yorkshire have won their bid to host the start of the Tour de France in the 2014 race.

The Northern England county has managed to beat out bids from Florence and Edinburgh to host a road stage on July 5 and July 6 before the Tour moves South for the third stage.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, told BBC Sport: "Today is a proud day for everyone involved in the bid and the county as a whole. We are honoured that the race organisers have selected Yorkshire to be the host location of the 2014 Grand Depart.

"It will mean that, less than two years after hosting the Olympics, the British public can look forward to another of the world's biggest sporting events coming to the country."

The 2014 race will finish in London and it is the first time since 2007 that the elite race will be hosted in the UK following its previous visit to the capital.
