Alvin Gentry has reportedly been asked to interview for the head coaching role with the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday.
The Lakers have made contact with a number of candidates since parting company with Mike D'Antoni last month, and Gentry is believed to have already spoken to general manager Mitch Kupchack on the phone.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Gentry has impressed Lakers officials with his approach to offense and is now rumoured to be one of the favourites to replace D'Antoni.
The 59-year-old is currently an assistant to Los Angeles Clippers head coach Doc Rivers, and has not led an NBA team since being fired by the Phoenix Suns in January 2013.
Gentry is reported to have met with the Utah Jazz recently, while a proposed interview with the Cleveland Cavaliers is scheduled for later this week.
