Brooklyn Nets coach Jason Kidd has been fined after the incident during the loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night.
Kidd appeared to mouth "hit me" to Tyshawn Taylor as he held a cup of soda, and after dropping the drink on the court he was able to talk to his players as he had run out of time-outs.
However, he has now been fined £30,000 for the incident for intentionally causing a delay in the game, the NBA has announced.
Kidd pleaded his innocence after the game claiming the cup slipped, but he has since accepted his punishment.
