Great Britain's Lizzy Yarnold stunned by Sochi triumph

British skeleton racer Lizzy Yarnold says that she 'cannot explain' winning the gold medal in Sochi on Friday.

Team GB's Lizzy Yarnold has described her triumph in the women's skeleton race at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi as "unexplainable".

The 25-year-old won the gold medal on Friday, finishing ahead of the USA's Noelle Pikus-Pace and Elena Nikitina of Russia.

"It is unexplainable," she told BBC Sport. "I am sure it won't sink in for another few days.

"I have worked so hard to get into this position and I am just so proud that my dreams have come true. I always have high expectations of myself."

Yarnold added that she had always wanted to participate in the Sochi Games.

"I treat all the races as the same and the relaxation comes with enjoying the sport and that was important today," she said.

"I always secretly intended to come to Sochi. That was always my dream and my goal but to win the whole race is far beyond my expectations."

Amy Williams of Great Britain won the skeleton event at the Vancouver Games four years ago.
