Great Britain speed skater Jack Whelbourne has thanked the British public for their support during their campaign at the Sochi Winter Olympics.

Team GB won four medals in Russia to finish the Games in 19th place, the nation's most successful performance since the inaugural Winter Olympics in 1924.

Whelbourne told BBC Sport ahead of the closing ceremony: "[We've had our] ups and downs but it has still been one of the best Winter Sports events for Team GB. Out here in Russia it has been one of the best Games we will go to.

"Thank you for all the support - maybe you can be a member of Team GB in the future."

The Russian Federation has finished the Games in first place with 33 medals, 13 of them being gold.
