Ben Simons competing thanks to a "university advert"

Great Britain's Ben Simons says that he is competing in the Winter Olympics after responding to an advert calling for 'future Olympians' to sign up.

Bobsleigh competitor Ben Simons has revealed that his journey to the Winter Olympics started when he spotted an advert on a noticeboard at his university two years ago.

Simons was then studying at Cardiff Metropolitan University when he saw a flier requesting 'future Olympians' who could transfer their skills onto the ice with the aim of reaching Sochi 2014.

As a former Welsh 60m champion, Simons applied and will now represent Team GB as part of the four-man GBR 2 bobsleigh team when the games begin this week.

He told Wales Online: "I applied but I didn't really ever think it was going to happen. I'd enjoyed athletics, I'd competed for Wales but I knew I wasn't going to make a summer Olympic Games so I thought why not try for the Winter Olympics.

"I did some speed and strength tests and thankfully I got through and I was the only one from the programme who has made it all the way to the Games."

Despite his new passion for bobsleigh, Simons has admitted that he would like to return to the running track once the games are over in order to try to become the first person to represent Great Britain at the Winter Olympics and in the Commonwealth Games in the same year.
