Gael Monfils bows out to compatriot Jeremy Chardy at Wimbledon

Jeremy Chardy records a shock win over his compatriot Gael Monfils at Wimbledon.

Gael Monfils has crashed out of Wimbledon at the first hurdle, losing to compatriot Jeremy Chardy over five sets in round one.

The 17th seed went down 7(4) 6-0 4-6 6-1 6-2 in what goes down as one of the first round's shock results.

The two Frenchmen looked evenly matched in the opening set, which Monfils claimed in a tie-break before taking a 6-0 hammering in the second.

Monfils edged back in front after taking a close third set 6-4, but Chardy upset the form guide with emphatic 6-1 and 6-2 successes in the final two sets to secure his spot in round two.
