Denis Istomin defeats Kevin Anderson in five-set epic at Wimbledon

Denis Istomin overturns a two-set deficit to edge out 20th seed Kevin Anderson in the first round at Wimbledon.

Kevin Anderson has been dumped out of Wimbledon in the first round after letting slip a two-set lead against Denis Istomin.

The South African - who almost defeated Novak Djokovic 12 months ago - appeared to be coasting through to the next stage after opening up a sizeable lead over Istomin, who has slipped outside of the top 100 during 2016.

Anderson also sent down 11 aces during the first two sets - the second of which was won 15-13 in a tie-break - but Istomin recorded the only break of serve in the third set before dominating a fourth-set breaker.

The Uzbekistan representative also sealed the only break in the deciding set before successfully serving out the match to prevail by a 4-6 6-7 6-4 7-6 6-3 scoreline.

After coming through in three hours 35 minutes, Istomin will now face Nicolas Almagro.
