Johanna Konta unfazed by Maria Sharapova threat

British number two Johanna Konta admits that competing against Maria Sharapova on Centre Court at Wimbledon is "beyond exciting".

British wildcard Johanna Konta has admitted that she is "looking forward" to taking on Maria Sharapova in the opening round of Wimbledon.

The 24-year-old, who is currently ranked 124th in the world, heads into the Grand Slam event in positive form on the back of reaching the Eastbourne quarter-finals.

Despite being presented with a tough first-round clash against 2004 women's champion Sharapova, the home favourite is determined to treat it as just another match on her way to the top.

"I am [confident]. The sun is shining I have got two hands, two feet, I have got food in my belly," she told The Guardian. "Presenting a calm demeanour and having the thought process I am having is in constant progress.

"It is just another tournament. Obviously it's Wimbledon and that's beyond exciting but the season is much longer than just this. I am looking forward to the fact that I get to play Maria Sharapova at Wimbledon. I don't think too many people can string those words into the same sentence."

Sharapova's clash against Konta is scheduled to get underway on Centre Court at around 3pm this afternoon.
