Irina-Camelia Begu upsets eighth seed Caroline Wozniacki in the US Open with a 6-2 6-2 triumph over the Dane.

Caroline Wozniacki has been knocked out in the first round of the US Open with a straight-sets defeat to Irina-Camelia Begu in New York.

The eighth seed struggled to cope with Begu's variation of shots in the first set and the Dane was broken on two occasions by her unseeded opponent.

Begu took advantage of the lead handed to her by the former world number one to complete a 6-2 victory in the first set.

Wozniacki's poor form was even clearer in the second set as she once again gifted Begu two break points.

Begu sensed an upset and capitalised on Wozniacki's inconsistency to wrap up the match with a 6-2 triumph to book her spot in round two.
