David Ferrer advances into third round of US Open in straight sets

David Ferrer grabs a place in the third round of the US Open with a straight-sets win over Filip Krajinovic.

David Ferrer has booked a place in the third round of the US Open with a 7-5 7-5 7-6(4) victory over Filip Krajinovic.

It was a very tight opening set between the competitors as both struggled to muster a break-point opportunity on Court 17.

The first chance of a break came in the 12th game when Ferrer took the point, which gave him a one-set lead.

The second set was less straightforward as Ferrer went a break up early on, but Krajinovic showed signs of a comeback by snatching his opponent's serve in the fifth game.

Krajinovic took another break point after losing serve, but it was not enough to draw level as Ferrer doubled his lead.

Once again, games went by way of serve in the initial stages of the third set, and with the game nicely poised at 4-4, Krajinovic broke serve, but Ferrer responded instantly with a break back.

The set was forced into a tie-break, which the Spaniard was able to clinch 7-4 to advance into the next phase of the tournament.
