Bernard Tomic has admitted that it was a "privilege" for him to play against Lleyton Hewitt in his final US Open match.
The 34-year-old bowed out of the competition as his compatriot defeated him in five sets, fending off a strong comeback from the 2001 champion.
Tomic has revealed that it was difficult to play against Hewitt because of the respect he has for his fellow Australian.
He told ESPN: "He's a huge legend for me and I've always looked up to him and so for me, it was difficult playing him tonight.
"It was very emotional and it was tough before the match to prepare. What a privilege it was today for me."
Tomic will face Richard Gasquet in the third round of the competition.
