Flavia Pennetta "really happy" to beat Samantha Stosur

Italy's Flavia Pennetta admits that she is "really happy" to be through to the quarter-finals of the US Open after beating former champion Samantha Stosur.

Flavia Pennetta has said that she is "really happy" to have beaten former US Open champion Samantha Stosur in the fourth round at this year's tournament at Flushing Meadows.

The Italian secured a 6-4 6-4 win over the 2011 champion, setting up a match with fifth seed Petra Kvitova or British qualifier Johanna Konta in the last eight.

The 26th seed said in an interview on court at the end of the match: "I'm really happy right now. It was a really tough match, I think it's the best match I've played this year. This tournament, this city is something special for me and I just have to thank everyone who came here to support me for so many years, already!

"I think I can play really well against her because she's like a Spanish player. She plays with a lot of spin and lot of different things. I've practised for 10 years in Spain and maybe at this speed, they're not too difficult for me.

"So I'm just trying to keep playing really hard, going more to the backhand then open to the forehand, just to mix a little bit more."

Pennetta had her best ever performance at a Grand Slam at the 2013 US Open, reaching the semi-finals.
