Britain's Aljaz Bedene has admitted that he did not expect Ernests Gulbis to withdraw from their first-round match at the US Open, despite noticing that he was struggling with a wrist problem.
The 26-year-old looked to be in danger after dropping the first set 3-6, but he bounced back to take the second 6-4 before the match was abandoned at 3-0 in the third.
"I wouldn't say I could expect it," BBC Sport quotes Bedene as saying. "He was doing something with his wrist. I guess he was injured before. He was hitting his serve quite well so I don't think it's a big injury, but I guess he didn't feel comfortable to play."
Bedene will take on the USA's Donald Young in the second round.
