Dominic Thiem has reached the second round of the Paris Masters after overcoming Adrian Mannarino in three sets.
The Austrian player came through 6-2 5-7 6-2 after one hour and 54 minutes of play.
Thiem began the match strongly, with the world number 19 breaking Mannarino's first two service games on his way to opening up a 4-0 lead. The Frenchman got on the board with a hold of serve, but he could not claw back the deficit as Thiem claimed the opening set.
Mannarino improved his service game in the second set, holding to love on three occasions and preventing Thiem from making a breakthrough. The world number 42 was then rewarded in the final game of the set when, with the score at 6-5 in his favour, he broke Thiem's serve for the first time in the match to take it to a third set.
Thiem recovered in the third, though, breaking Mannarino twice to move 5-2 ahead and set up the chance to serve for the match, which he did at the first attempt.
