Swiss youngster Belinda Bencic wins Rogers Cup

Belinda Bencic wins the Rogers Cup in Toronto after Simona Halep retires hurt in the deciding set.

Swiss youngster Belinda Bencic has won the Rogers Cup in Toronto after her opponent, Simona Halep, was forced to retire in the final with an injury.

The 18-year-old, who won her first tour title at Eastbourne this summer, took the first set on tie-break.

Bencic, who beat Serena Williams in the semi-final, had led 5-3 in the second set, but Halep was able to break back before winning the set 7-6 and forcing a decider.

However, the second seed struggled with the heat and required treatment on a leg injury.

After losing her first two service games in the third set, Halep decided she could no longer continue, handing the Swiss youngster her second WTA title.

As a result of her victory in Toronto, Bencic will move up from 20th to 12th in the latest world rankings.
