Feliciano Lopez has booked his spot in the second round of the Madrid Open with a 7-5 3-6 6-4 victory over Benjamin Becker on Monday afternoon.
The first set remained on serve until 5-5, when Lopez broke at the second time of asking, before holding to move 7-5 ahead of his German opponent.
Becker responded impressively in the second, however, breaking at 0-1, before eventually racing into a 4-1 lead. Lopez held his next two service games, but the damage had already been done as the match headed for a deciding set.
Lopez again lost his first service game to hand Becker the advantage, but the home favourite secured back-to-back breaks at the end of the set to secure the decider 6-4 and advance into the second round.
