David Ferrer has defeated Bernard Tomic in straight sets to reach the third round at the Sony Ericsson Open.
The Spaniard broke his opponent to begin the first, in which he maintained his lead until Tomic broke back to tie proceedings at four games apiece. However, Ferrer broke straight back and then held serve for the set at 6-4.
Tomic broke the Spaniard to start the second on the front foot, but Ferrer again broke straight back to make it 2-2. The Australian was able to match him, and once again took the set to four games all.
However, the world number five capitalized on another late break point to once again escape with a 6-4 win.
