World number one Novak Djokovic required three sets to see off the challenge from Daniel Gimeno-Traver at the Madrid Open this evening.
Djokovic made light work of a player that is ranked 136 places below him by recording a 6-2 success in the opening set.
However, Gimeno-Traver caused an upset in the second set by claiming two of Djokovic's service game to replicate the Serbian's 6-2 triumph in the opener.
The two players traded serves during the opening four games of the deciding set as Djokovic looked to recover from his setback.
He achieved that feat in the fifth game when he broke Gimeno-Traver's serve to open up a 3-2 advantage.
Another break of serve soon followed as Djokovic went on to wrap up the match 6-2 2-6 6-3.
The defending champion will now face either Stanislas Wawrinka or Jurgen Melzer in round three.
