Tomas Berdych has secured a place in the third round of the Monte Carlo Masters following a 7-5 6-4 victory over Marcel Granollers.
It was a tight contest in the early stages of the opening set as both competitors committed strong serves and were able to hold with precise forehands and swift returns, but it took Berdych to nab a vital break.
The Czech then pushed on to win two consecutive games to take a one-set lead, but Granollers refused to back down by holding his first four games in the second set.
Despite keeping his serve, the Spaniard struggled to break his opponent, which allowed Berdych to move on top to grab his own break point and comfortably finish off the set.
