Dominic Thiem overcomes Marcel Granollers to reach French Open quarter-finals

Dominic Thiem beats Marcel Granollers in a rain-affected fourth-round match to reach the quarter-finals of the French Open.

Dominic Thiem has booked himself a spot in the quarter-finals of the French Open after coming through a rain-affected clash against Marcel Granollers.

The competitors won a set apiece before rain stopped play on Tuesday, but it was 13th seed Thiem who sealed the match 6-2 6-7(2) 6-1 6-4 on Wednesday.

Thiem started the contest strongly when he went a double break up early in the first set, and even though Granollers created five break points, he squandered all of them and his opponent converted on his fifth set point.

The 22-year-old looked to have carried his momentum into the second set with an instant break of serve, but Granollers broke back before sealing a tie-break 7-2.

Despite the havoc caused by the rain, Thiem managed to bounce back in the third set with a double break and completed the fourth set in 36 minutes, while Granollers failed to create a single break point.
