David Ferrer reaches the third round of the French Open by defeating fellow Spaniard Albert Montanes in straight sets.

David Ferrer has secured a place in the third round of the French Open with a comfortable 6-2 6-1 6-3 win over Albert Montanes.

The fourth seed entered the clash with a record of winning every set against Montanes in their previous encounters, and it appeared from the early exchanges that his record was to remain untouched.

Ferrer snatched the first break of serve after finding his stride with powerful shots across the clay court, leaving Montanes struggling to return Ferrer's shots with much conviction.

After securing the opening set, Ferrer continued his dominance by claiming another early break, which allowed him to push on and take the set, with his fellow Spaniard putting just one game on the board.

The third set continued by way of the first two with Ferrer on top in the early stages, but Montanes tried to cause an upset by fighting back to draw level on games.

Despite trying to launch a comeback, Ferrer was able to see it through and nab a place in the next phase of the competition.
