Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro overcame an injury scare to defeat Spaniard Albert Montanes 6-2 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 6-1 in the French open.
The 2009 semi-finalist required treatment on his left knee during the second set, but shrugged off the wound to secure a service winner on his first match point.
Del Potro's forehand looked unstoppable as he stormed into the lead, before faltering and allowing Montanes to fight back from 5-1 down in the tie-break to level.
The Argentine, who looked rejuvenated after his trainer tended to his injury and dosed him up with painkillers, served up a storm to take the closing set 6-1.
Del Potro will take on France's Edouard Roger Vasselin in the second round.
