Jo-Wilfried Tsonga safely through to round three

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has advanced into round three of the Australian Open after a 7-5 6-4 6-4 victory over Ricardo Mello.

Mello, who has failed to advance past this round in any of his previous tournaments in Melbourne, provided tough opposition for the Frenchman.

Tsonga broke twice in the first, however, before breaking early in the second to secure a two-set lead.

His Brazilian opponent struggled in the final set, with Tsonga breaking once more, before serving to secure the final set.

Tsonga made the Australian Open final in 2008.
