Andrey Golubev injury sees Stanislas Wawrinka into round two

An injury to Kazakhstan's Andrey Golubev sees eighth seed Stanislas Wawrinka progress to the second round of the 2014 Australian Open.

An injury to Kazakhstan's Andrey Golubev has seen eighth seed Stanislas Wawrinka progress to the second round of the 2014 Australian Open.

The pair had been on court for just over an hour when Golubev decided to retire due to a problem with his lower leg.

Wawrinka raced into a 5-2 lead in the opening set before Golubev called for the trainer, who applied a strip of supportive tape from the world number 85's ankle up to his knee.

Golubev won the next two games, but Wawrinka claimed the set 6-4 and then raced into a 4-1 lead in the second, which ended prematurely.

Wawrinka will face either Alejandro Falla or Mikhail Kukushkin in round two.
