Adam Peaty: "It's so surreal"

Olympic champion Adam Peaty describes his record-breaking swim as a "surreal" experience.

Olympic champion Adam Peaty has described his record-winning swim tonight as "surreal".

The 21-year-old beat his own world record with a time of 57.13s in the 100m breaststroke to claim Team GB's first medal of the Rio Olympics.

"It's so surreal to get Team GB's first gold," Peaty told BBC Sport afterwards. "This is a product of seven years' work. I came out tonight, took that first 50m, and then gave it my lot. I did it for my country because it means so much to me.

"Coming into this meet, everybody was saying it was going to be a tough one. This just shows that pressure is not real. It's a thing in your mind that almost makes you stop achieving your dreams.

"Going out tonight, I wasn't scared of anyone. It was just complete tunnel vision."

With his win, Peaty also became the first British man to triumph in the pool at an Olympics in 28 years.
