Great Britian end the European Short Course Swimming Championships with a joint-high 23 medals, including an unrivalled nine golds in Otopeni.

Great Britain ended the 2023 European Short Course Swimming Championships at the top of the overall medal table thanks to another five podium finishes on the final day.

The women's 200m freestyle final saw GB clinch their ninth and final gold of the tournament, as Freya Anderson topped the standings with a time of 1:52.16, half a second quicker than Czech runner-up Barbora Seemanova.

Freya Colbert (1:54.07) was further back in the bronze medal position for GB, who also added another pair of silvers to their tally through Luke Greenbank and Duncan Scott, who placed second in the men's 200m backstroke and 400m individual medley respectively.

Meanwhile, in the women's 50m breaststroke final, Imogen Clark (29.41) shared the third and final place on the podium with Italy's Jasmine Nocentini, as Great Britain took home a total of 23 medals, the joint-most of the Championships alongside France.

The Brits' haul of nine gold medals was unmatched, though, and they also packed eight silvers and six bronzes into their suitcases from a highly successful week in Otopeni, where the Republic of Ireland's Daniel Wiffin also became a world-beater.

Having already won gold in the men's 400m freestyle and 1500m freestyle events, Wiffin set a new world record of 7:20.46 in Sunday's 800m freestyle final, beating the previous best of 7:23.42 set by Grant Hackett in 2008.

The 22-year-old powered to the European title almost 10 seconds ahead of silver medallist David Aubry of France, while his twin brother Nathan Wiffen also qualified for the 800m final, placing eighth with a time of 7:39.99.
