Nicolas D'Oriano beats Russian Ernest Maksumov to gold in 1500m freestyle

Nicolas D'Oriano of France wins the 1500m freestyle at the European Games in Baku.

Nicolas D'Oriano edged out Russia's Ernest Maksumov to win gold for France in this evening's 1500m freestyle at the European Games.

The 18-year-old managed a Games record 15:13.31 to earn his country's fifth gold in Baku thus far after finishing 0.51s clear of Maksumov in second.

Both athletes finished comfortably clear of the trailing pack, as Marc Hinawi won the bronze in a time of 15:25.63.

Tom Derbyshire was the only British hopeful going into the race, but the 17-year-old was unable to emulate Luke Greenbank and Luke Davies from earlier on and win a medal.

Greenbank picked up gold in the 100m backstroke, while Davies scooped bronze in the 200m breaststroke.
