English swimmer Ben Proud sees Glasgow Games as "springboard" for Rio Olympics

Team England short-distance specialist Ben Proud wants to use the upcoming Glasgow Commonwealth Games as a "springboard" for Rio 2016.

Teenage Team England swimmer Ben Proud has revealed that he wants to use the upcoming Glasgow Commonwealth Games as a "springboard" for the Rio 2016 Olympics.

A specialist over short distance, Proud, 19, already holds the British records for the 50m butterfly and freestyle disciplines after a breakthrough last 18 months.

He is hoping that he can burst on to the international scene in Glasgow and use the experience to propel him to better things at the Brazilian Olympic Games in two years' time.

"I'm really hoping that [Glasgow] is my springboard into Rio," he told Sports Mole at the Team England holding camp in London.

"The past few years have been exceeding my expectations. Every year I swim another big [personal best] or do something I didn't expect."

Proud will be competing in the 50m freestyle, 50m butterfly, 100m freestyle and 4x100m relay at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre in Glasgow.
