China's Olympic champion Sun Yang served three-month ban for doping

China's world and Olympic swimming champion Sun Yang serves a three-month ban after testing positive for a banned stimulant back in May.

The China Anti-Doping Agency has confirmed that world and Olympic champion swimmer Sun Yang has served a three-month ban for failing a drugs test earlier this year.

The 22-year-old tested positive for stimulant trimetazidine at the national swimming championships back in May, but he defended himself by claiming that he took the drug for medical reasons.

China deputy director Zhao Jian told Xinhua news agency: "Sun Yang in this matter was not completely responsible and the positive test is his mistake, but the mistake is not very serious or negligent. Because of this the three-month ban is reasonable."

The stimulant in question, which was added to the World Anti-Doping Agency's banned list this year, is usually used to treat angina, dizziness and tinnitus.
