Great Britain's Islay Watson takes European silver in windfoiling

Great Britain's Islay Watson takes the silver medal in windfoiling at the European Championships, with the event set to make its Olympic debut in 2024.

Great Britain's Islay Watson has scooped the silver medal in windfoiling at the iQFoil European Championships in Marseille.

Ahead of the event's Olympic debut in 2024, Watson finished behind home favourite Helene Noesmoen of France to take second place, while Israel's Shachar Reshef took the bronze medal in the women's race.

Amid tough conditions throughout the week, Watson expressed her relief at avoiding a "nightmare" day as she claimed a podium finish in France.

"I'm tired and that was very stressful but I'm happy I managed to hold on to a medal," Watson said in quotes attributed to Sail-World.

"The conditions all week have been very up and down and I feel like everyone has had some good days and others which have been a nightmare. I'm just happy to put a good regatta together and come out OK at the end."

Watson's compatriot Saskia Sills placed eighth in the race, but there was more joy for GB with Finn Hawkins, who took silver in the Under-21s men's competition.
