Newcastle Falcons' Dean Richards delighted for Harlequins

Dean Richards says that Newcastle Falcons didn't put in the performance that the week's training had suggested against former club Harlequins on Sunday.

Dean Richards has expressed his delight after former club Harlequins beat Newcastle Falcons but admits that his current side squandered too many opportunities.

Newcastle failed to register a single try as Tom Williams opened the scoring before a Sam Smith double and score from Danny Care helped Quins to a 35-9 victory on Sunday at Kingston Park.

"I'm delighted for the lads I worked with at Quins, but there has been lot more work done there since I left," Richards told the press. "They have been together seven or eight years and there was a lot of quality youngsters there put in front of me and Conor has carried that on.

"As far as we're concerned we were competitive last week, but we missed a of opportunities today and we didn't perform. I don't know why.

"We didn't take our foot of the gas in training, but we couldn't adapt to their skill and a lot of our players are very disappointed. We need to just go out there and play and not be too worried about the outcome."

Richards spent four years in charge at Harlequins before receiving a three-year coaching ban in 2009 for his involvement in the Bloodgate scandal.
