Katherine Grainger wins fourth Olympic silver medal

Great Britain's Katherine Grainger wins her fourth Olympic silver in the women's double sculls having been pipped to gold by Poland.

Great Britain's Katherine Grainger has won her fourth Olympic silver medal after being pipped to the line by Poland in the final of the women's double sculls in Rio this afternoon.

Grainger, who has now won medals at each of the last five Games, came out of retirement to compete in Rio, but she was unable to successfully defend her Olympic gold medal alongside Victoria Thornley.

The pair led most of the way, but were caught in the closing stages of the race and just missed out on the top prize to Poland by less than a second.

Forty-year-old Grainger has now won silver medals in Sydney, Athens, Beijing and Rio, in addition to her gold in London four years ago, making her the most decorated British female Olympian of all time.

Lithuania crossed the line in third to pick up the bronze, while Greece missed out on a place on the podium in fourth.
